Any powerful, spicy flavor, esp. from a root

Horseradish is good stuff. I love it on corned beef and cabbage, or on steak sandwiches. And let’s not forget wasabi, too—you can probably tell I’m always looking for an excuse to go out for sushi. Wasabi peas are a great option too.

Another strongly flavored root is ginger, which I also happen to love (and which, coincidentally, is also a sushi condiment).

If you’re not a fan of horseradish specifically, have the spiciest sauce or condiment you enjoy:

  • Sambal oelek
  • Frank’s Red-Hot
  • Tabasco
  • Sriracha
  • Cholula
  • Cocktail sauce
  • Togarashi

And if you can’t take much heat at all, pick something warming, like chili or a mild curry. Foods that make you sweat are good for you!

Wild Horseradish

CANON: I think you can do this one! Not sure if there’s a botanical difference between wild horseradish and cultivated horseradish. I wouldn’t think so. So, yes, grab some horseradish and warn your sinuses!
